The Motion Blur node blurs its input image to simulate the blurring one would get using a live-action camera with a slow shutter speed. It is normally used to add "motion blur" to a character.
The blur's direction is automatically calculated from the motion of the image relative to the camera since the previous frame. The amount of the blur is set in its XSheet column as a percentage of the motion since the previous frame:
For example, if the input image has moved 2 00E since the previous frame, and the camera has moved 1.00W, then the image has moved a total of 3.00E relative to the camera. A Trail of 50% would therefore blur the image for 1.5 fields to the West:
